Lao New Year gathers the most people. It is necessary to document Lao New Years. We cannot see the full picture of the Lao American Community without photographing the moments that take place during the New Year. For me, it helps visualize how much the community has grown in San Diego. It equally represents the preservation of culture as well as the resilience of the community. Rooted in tradition, but often flexible to the modern day workings, Lao New Year becomes the source of connection for many. Often coming to America with nothing, Lao Refugees built communities around the temples. The temples acted as a religious center as well as a place to connect / re-connect with family and friends. A place of dynamic congregation, the photos seek to capture the energy and all its colors. Documenting Lao New Year then, becomes a necessary act of visibility. Where folks exist in the most Lao ways possible. Let the photos tell the story. It is a way to document the elders in my community.
